GRITR really does provide all EDC tools in this one handy multi-tool. The needle nose and regular pliers come with spring-assisted built-in wire cutter for easy and comfortable use.
The 3” knife blade and the small scissor is made from 440 stainless steel for added strength, hardness and wear resistance. The rest of the hand tools are made from 420 stainless steel that provides high strength and good rust and corrosion resistance. The knife and scissors are both multipurpose and can be used for EDC tasks. The scissor is sharp but comes with a dolphin-pointed mouth designed to prevent injuries.
The Philips head pocket screwdriver and reamer are both heavy duty and perfect for EDC tasks. The bottle and can openers come with a small and a large flat-head screwdriver and a wire stripper. The cutter is multipurpose and can be used in a multitude of situations. Lastly, the metal filer does not let your blade get brittle or blunt. The nylon pouch is durable and comes with a belt loop to make it easy to hang on to the belt and carry.
First Impressions and Unboxing of GRITR R3 Dolomite Multi-Tool
The tool came in a very simple packaging in just a simple cardboard box with the GRITR branding. It mentioned all the mini tools on the main tool on the box along with the dimensions. When we opened it, inside was the nylon pouch in which the tool was safely packed inside the plastic sleeve.
The R3 Dolomite Multi-Tool was pretty impressive at first sight. It seemed really heavy duty and well made. It feels great to hold, with a solid grip and nice shine.
We started with plucking out each tool out of the main handle without fully opening it first. The Saw blade, ruler with a flathead screwdriver on top, knife blade and scissors came out easily. Some of the hand tools are a little hard to reach and take out, but they come out either way. You can also pull out one tool at a time if you want to use it. The scissors dangles between the main wrench, and you can slide it over to use it.
After pulling the four tools back in place, we opened the two main poles, and it turned into a wrench with pliers. Its scales acted as the handle, with the pliers protruding out fully. And it also springs into action perfectly.
From one end of the pole, we slid out a can opener, a bottle opener and a multipurpose tool cutter. Once open, it locks into place until you disengage it. You push the black lever to release the opener and lock it back into its place. It is the liner lock tab placed beneath the hand tools.
From the other end comes out the Philips screwdriver, reamer and filer. All the tools came out smoothly and lock in lace with a simple liner lock. So when you want to close the hand tools in place, you have to press the button at the bottom to disengage it and then push back in place.
To close the wrench with pliers, all you have to do it flip it over in the opposite direction, and it will turn itself back to two stainless steel rods, safe to put away.
The best thing about this tool is that it is super heavy duty, smooth, flexible and easy to use. The 420 and 440 stainless steel is a good choice as it is smooth to touch without any visible scratches.
And when it comes to price, getting it while it is on sale seems like a steal. If you buy all these tools separately, they will probably cost you ten times the price of GRITR R3 Dolomite.
Steel of GRITR R3 Dolomite Multi-Tool
The 420 stainless steel is a high carbon steel with a minimum chromium content of 12%. It is very durable with excellent corrosion resistance and superior strength.
On the other hand, the blade and scissors made from 440 stainless steel is also high carbon but high chromium martensitic stainless steel. It has high level of hardness and wear resistance after heat treatment. Therefore, the blades of a hand tool such as that of R3 Dolomite is a good choice because it can be used for lighter EDC tasks.
Testing the GRITR R3 Dolomite Multi-Tool
The GRITR multi-tool is a bit awkward to use. The fact that it takes time to identify where each tool is when you need to put it to work can be tedious.
You may need to get to know the tool first and learn how it operates before you can use it more confidently. Another drawback is that each tool is too small for comfort. And let’s face it – no tool comes with a handle of its own for a smooth grip. You may have to grip it awkwardly considering the small size of it.
However, once you get the hang of it, you will know not to open more than one tool at a time for comfort and safety. We tested the tool by opening all the small tools or some of them at a time. It is better not to do that. A better approach is to close the wrench, so that the pliers do not poke you while you use the blade, box opener or can opener.
We started by testing out the scissors first. It lacked a smooth spring action. Once pressed into a cutting position, it does not spring back open. We have to make an extra effort to pull it back and then slide it back into the cutting position. It was awkward to use, and the result was not good. We tried cutting the cardboard box it came in. It did not cut it well.
Next we tested the knife blade by slicing it through a paper. It was very sharp and sliced through the paper with exceptional ease. It was a thick printing paper, but the knife had no problem cutting it. Then, I also cut the plastic pipe, all cuts are precise and cutting anything with its blade is really smooth. Later, as its liner lock The lock works smoothly, but only if you push it with your thumb. Pressing it with your index finger would not work.
You can fold the tool in different ways, however it feels comfortable when using a certain tool. It is better to open both the handles long together to make for a larger handle to hold on to.
The flathead screwdriver comes with a ruler and acts as a filer. So we tested the flathead screwdriver to open the screws, and they came right off without a problem.
We also used the bottle opener with a flathead screwdriver to unscrew another flat screw, and that also worked easily. It also screwed back in effortlessly.
